How to measure a load for the right pallet size

Updated 15 October 2026 · PalletChecker editorial process

Measure the packed goods, including packaging and projections, before choosing a pallet footprint. This page is the measuring checklist; the full pallet-size guide compares UK, Euro, half, quarter, Yankee and CP dimensions.

1. Record the packed length and width

Measure the outermost points in millimetres. Include protective packing, feet and projections. Note whether the load can be rotated and whether it rests across the deck or on a few concentrated points.

2. Confirm the receiving site’s footprint

A load fitting a 1200 × 1000 mm pallet does not mean the receiver accepts that format. Ask about permitted footprints, height, entry direction and any named pallet scheme. A 1200 × 800 mm footprint alone does not identify a licensed EPAL product.

3. Check the load on the deck

For a simple rectangular example, a packed 1100 × 900 mm footprint fits inside 1200 × 1000 mm geometrically. That says nothing about load capacity, gaps between deck boards, stability or acceptance. Confirm those separately; do not assume overhang is permitted.

4. Add height, weight and handling

Record total loaded height, gross weight and unloading equipment. Check whether the pallet will travel on forks, a conveyor or rack beams. Send these details with the footprint.
