Can a museum use ordinary wooden pallets in a collection store?
Strength is only one consideration. Museums & Galleries of NSW guidance identifies damaging vapours from some woods and coatings, and addresses sealing exposed wooden pallets. Ask the conservator to approve the carrier, barrier materials and storage environment for the objects. Heat treatment alone is not evidence of conservation suitability.
What to check next
- Identify sensitive objects and their storage conditions.
- Agree materials and protective barriers with the collections team.
